What This Does

Hootsuite's built-in AI caption assistant lets you generate post copy directly inside the scheduling workflow — so you never have to write captions in Google Docs and paste them over again. The whole process of draft → edit → schedule happens in one place.

Before You Start

  • You have a Hootsuite account (AI features available on Professional plan and above)
  • You're logged in at hootsuite.com
  • You know which platforms you're posting to today

Steps

1. Open the Composer

From the Hootsuite dashboard, click the green + New Post button in the top-right corner. The Composer panel will open on the right side of the screen.

2. Find the AI caption feature

In the Composer's caption text box, look for the purple sparkle icon labeled "OwlyWriter AI" or "Generate caption with AI." It appears inside the text field, typically at the bottom-left corner of the caption area.

3. Enter your topic

Click the sparkle icon → a small dialog appears → type a short description of your post topic (e.g., "announcing our summer sale — 20% off all outdoor furniture") → select your desired Tone from the dropdown (Professional, Casual, Informative, Witty, etc.) → click Generate.

4. Review and choose a variation

Hootsuite generates 3-5 caption variations. Scroll through them — each takes a slightly different angle on your topic. Click Use this caption on the one you like best. It populates directly into the Composer text box.

5. Edit, select platforms, and schedule

The caption loads into the text area. Edit as needed (add/remove emojis, adjust CTA, add hashtags). Select the social profiles you want to post to at the top of the Composer. Click Schedule for later or Post now.

Real Example

Scenario: It's Monday morning and you have 5 posts to schedule for the week. You've been writing captions in Google Docs and pasting them in.

What you type/do: Open Composer → sparkle icon → type "coffee shop featuring a new pumpkin spice latte for autumn, local Austin TX audience" → select Tone: Casual → Generate → review 4 variations → pick the one that starts with an emoji and feels most natural → edit to add the shop's handle → schedule for 9 AM Wednesday.

What you get: A ready-to-schedule Instagram caption that took 3 minutes instead of 10 — and you never left Hootsuite.

Tips

  • The AI performs better when you include who the audience is in your topic description ("targeting Austin locals who care about local businesses" vs. just "coffee shop").
  • If none of the 3 generated options work, click Generate again — it pulls fresh variations each time.
  • You can use this to generate multiple drafts across your scheduled posts rapidly — think of it as a caption generator you run 5 times in a row, not a one-off feature.

Tool interfaces change — if a button has moved, look for similar AI/magic/smart options in the same menu area.
